Crystal Palace are said to have made an approach for an Englishman playing abroad.
Crystal Palace are now said to have made their move as they look to replace Eberechi Eze and add depth to the middle of the park, in general. Eze finally departed over the weekend after months of speculation, joining Arsenal on a deal worth more than £60million in all.
The loss is a big one, and Palace must look to replace the England international, and soon, with the summer transfer window set to close in just one week.
Speaking after his side’s draw with Nottingham Forest over the weekend, Oliver Glasner said: “I won’t talk about the players we need; it makes it more expensive. We want to be competitive in the Premier League, European football and cup competitions — and when you lose one of your top stars, it is pretty clear you have to replace him. That is what we are looking for and I’m pretty sure we will get it done because we have already found the right one.”
He added: “Ismaila [Sarr] had a fantastic season for us and the way he is playing helps us a lot. His directness and runs are his strengths. But if I ask him to always dribble in midfield and drop in, maybe he loses his strengths. This is what Eberechi gave us. Sometimes you need someone who can dribble past everyone and score a great goal. This is what Ebs gave us. If you want to progress, you need this kind of player.
“This is what we are looking for. But [what we want] is also maybe what Eberechi did not give to the team. Ebs has a lot of strengths but also maybe a few weaknesses. Maybe we will find a player who is a little bit better where Ebs has his weaknesses and maybe therefore not that good where he has his big strengths but showing that kind of profile. This player we have to find. We already found a few of them, and it’s now just getting them to South London.”
According to a fresh report from Fabrizio Romano, Palace have now identified Atletico Madrid star and former Chelsea man Conor Gallagher as a target. Romano posted on X: “Crystal Palace have approached Atlético Madrid over potential return for Conor Gallagher. Concrete interest for loan move but nothing agreed at this stage, initial talks took place. One to watch based on Atlético decision - follows @BobbyManzi info.”
Gallagher had a strong start to life at Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish giants, who have had a difficult start to the season, effectively replaced him by signing Alex Baena from Villarreal on a big-money deal this summer. Gallagher will see regular football as vital as he looks to make a push for the England World Cup squad next summer. Crucially for Glasner, the midfielder can play in both an attacking and deeper role in the middle of the park.
Gary Linker said of Gallagher back in 2023: “Conor Gallagher continues to put in a good shift for them. His numbers are really good as well actually, if you look at them.”
