Heading into the preseason, one player many were keeping an eye on for the New York Giants was quarterback Jaxson Dart. Following multiple strong showings, the rookie received high praise from a former player turned analyst.
During the NFL Draft, the Giants traded back into the first round to nab Dart as their QB of the future. However, they aren't handing him the reins right away. The front office also went out and signed Russell Wilson in free agency, who Brian Daboll named New York's starter at the beginning of training camp.
Seeing that he's clearly the long-term option under center, many believe Dart will get on the field at some point during his rookie year. Based on how he looked in preseason, some want to see the move happen sooner rather than later.
Shannon Sharpe gives high praise to NY Giants QB Jaxson Dart
During a recent episode of his Nightcap podcast with Chad Ochocinco, Shannon Shapre gave his thoughts on the Giants' rookie QB. He had nothing but good things to say about Dart, applauding his style of play and the way he carries himself on the field.
"You see the way he moves in the pocket? You see the throws that he's making?" Sharpe said."His command of the offense. His ability to push the ball down the field. His ability, he's scrambling and he's like oh I forgot about my back. Wham, throws it to the back. I said are you sure boy a rookie? Rookies don't normally play like that. He plays with a lost of poise, big time arm."
Across three preseason appearances, Dart totaled 372 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. He also displayed the ability to make plays with his legs as well as his arm.
Despite how he looked in the preseason, the Giants seem locked into their plan with the young QB. They want to give him a chance to learn the game behind the scenes from a pair of veterans before eventually taking charge himself.
Although he won't be taking the starting job right away, Dart's play should have the New York feeling good about their latest long-term investment at quarterback.
All Dart can do now is continue to work diligently behind the scenes and wait for his number to be called.
