Fulham vs Manchester United: Emile Smith Rowe rescues a point for the Cottagers

For the second successive match, Fulham drew 1-1, this time at Craven Cottage against Manchester United. The visitors were the first to take the lead through Lenny Yoro, who scored his first goal for United.

But Fulham refused to back down and got their equaliser through Emile Smith Rowe to ensure that the points were shared in this encounter.

Manchester United would have been hoping for more ahead of their next Premier League match, where they face Burnley, whilst Fulham prepare for a tough trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

Story of the match:

Manchester United made their intent clear from the first whistle in this match as Matheus Cunha's attempt rattled the woodwork in just the third minute of play. But Fulham, no pushovers themselves, had a response of their own as Joshua King became the first in white to test Altay Bayindir.

The tussle to gain the ascendancy of the match was well and truly on - something neither side could really do in the opening half. The danger man for Manchester United in the early phases of proceedings was Matheus Cunha, who had a fantastic opportunity to put the Red Devils in front in this one.

The Brazilian took a magnificent touch to bring the ball under his spell before firing a shot that forced a strong instinctive save from Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal.

Both teams continued to look like a threat offensively as both goalkeepers were called into action on multiple occasions through the duration of the opening 45 minutes. That was until the 35th minute at least, when VAR intervened in play for the first time in this match.

Referee Chris Kavanagh was ordered to the monitor to review a tussle in the box between Calvin Bassey and Mason Mount, where the latter appeared to be thrown on the floor by the Fulham defender. Despite the 25-year-old clearly being in disagreement with the check, Kavanagh deemed it enough and pointed to the spot.

Bruno Fernandes, as he so often has, stepped up to take the penalty against Leno. Given his superb record with penalties, there was little doubt around the ground about this resulting in a goal - this could not have been further from the outcome.

United's captain looked as calm as ever, stepping up to take the all-important kick. However, his shot flew over the bar, keeping the game level and leaving the away end in stunned silence.

The players would go down the tunnel with the game being balanced on a knife-edge as Bruno Fernandes would have been ruing his missed penalty, a big moment in the outcome of this match.

The deadlock just could not be broken in the first half - usually, the normality in this fixture. In fact, this was the fifth consecutive Premier League clash between the pair where no goals were scored in the opening half.

One thing all of these games have had in common, however, is that there have been goals in the second 45 minutes, and this game was no different at all.

Just over ten minutes into the second half, United struck from a corner. Something that they so often suffer from defensively, the Red Devils benefited from the set piece this time round as Lenny Yoro's header hit the back of Rodrigo Muniz and trickled into the net to give Manchester United a valuable lead in this one.

From that point, it looked like United were in gear and would be on the hunt for an insurance goal, but that was not the case, as the Cottagers dug deep and began to claw their way back into the game. Substitutions were brought on to try and turn this game around in favour of the hosts.

Marco Silva bolstered his attack, bringing on Harry Wilson and Emile Smith Rowe - a decision that would have a big impact on how the match unfolded.

After a lot of sustained pressure, the hosts got their reward and struck level through substitute Smith Rowe. Iwobi's cross was left by Muniz and fired past Bayindir by the 25-year-old. The goal had tipped the momentum in favour of the Cottagers, looking the much more likely side to score.

But, this would not be the case as the teams would take a point each from this match. United would have been disappointed with how this ended, having had the game in their hands. It was also the first time in 15 years that the Red Devils failed to win at Craven Cottage. Fulham would be happy with another point from a tough fixture ahead of their clash with Chelsea next weekend.

Man of the Match:

Matthijs de Ligt:

Despite not taking all three points back to Manchester, Matthijs de Ligt was the standout player on the pitch today. He was a commanding figure for the Red Devils, justifying why they signed him last summer.

The Dutchman won the majority of his duels, very rarely losing out in the defensive areas of play. He was also effective at playing United out of danger with a 95% passing accuracy and a 75% long ball accuracy.

It was a strong performance from United's star defender, who once again showed why he is a leading figure in this Manchester United team.
