Eagles rookie report card: Jets preseason game

The Eagles finished their third and final preseason game with a win. Here’s a look at how the rookies did.

Draft Picks

Jihaad Campbell: N/A

Did not play and will likely see meaningful snaps immediately in the regular season.

Drew Mukuba: N/A

Did not play and might see meaningful snaps in the regular season.

Ty Robinson: D-

Ty Robinson struggled once again. Despite seeing the field quite a bit all preseason, Robinson really looks out of place on an NFL field. He cannot anchor against the run and he consistently gets blown up by pass blockers. The Eagles are obviously hoping he can put his tools together, but preseason suggests it may take longer than they’d hope.

Mac McWilliams: C

McWilliams has looked good for most of the preseason but had his worst game against the Jets. He gave up a handful of receptions, including some long ones, and he also missed a tackle. McWilliams still has a real chance to play meaningful snaps this year on defense, but the team will probably kick the tires on their veterans first.

Smael Mondon: B-

This was easily the best game from Smael Mondon all preseason. While Mondon was hit or miss (literally) in the run game, he was really impressive in coverage and as a blitzer. He played fast and far more confidently than in weeks passed.

Antwuan Powell-Ryland: B+

Some life! Antwan Powell-Ryland had a great game after a quiet preseason. Powell-Ryland, unsurprisingly, did his best work as a pass rusher … which he was drafted to do. He had a sack and generated pressure throughout the night. This is the game he needed to stick around with the team as a rookie.

Kyle McCord: C+

Despite an ugly box score, I actually came away more impressed with Kyle McCord than I have all preseason. McCord dealt with an inordinate amount of pressure and his wide receivers struggled to stay open or hold onto the ball. However, he had some bright moments making plays in and outside the pocket, including making some sharp throws. Not quite QB2 quality play, hence the Eagles trading for Sam Howell, but encouraging that he could be groomed into a viable backup.

Drew Kendall: A

Drew Kendall split his snaps between guard and center, looking really good at both. On a night where most of the Eagles line seemed to struggle, Kendall held it down.

Cameron Williams: C-

Below average game for the rookie tackle. Williams had some bright moments throughout the night, but struggled to be consistent in the pass and run game.

Myles Hinton: B

Hinton had a really solid night in pass protection but struggled to get any push in the run game, which was a problem for much of the Eagles line against the Jets.

Hollin Pierce: C

Pierce had an up and down night. On passing downs, he enveloped defenders with his size and kept them at bay. On running downs, he missed assignments and struggled to find a man to block. Pierce is a gifted player, but will need to improve discipline and awareness to get on the field.

Taylor Morin: N/A

Barely saw any snaps, let alone targets.

Darius Cooper: N/A

Darius Cooper caught no passes on a handful of offensive snaps, nor did he see any targets. It’s possible he still pushes to make the team as WR6, but his play overall dipped massively after an impressive week one.

ShunDerrick Powell: N/A

Only saw a handful of snaps and no carries

Montrell Johnson: B+

Montrell Johnson outplayed his box score, running hard and forcing missed tackles on what felt like every snap. Johnson had a nice little touchdown scamper where he followed the blocking beautifully and sprinted for a score. Johnson was the only back who managed to look good behind the Eagles line against the Jets.

Lance Dixon: C+

Solid but unremarkable game by the rookie linebacker.

Maxen Hook: F

Hook struggled to make a positive impact when on the field. He looked out of place in coverage and as a tackler. In a deep safety room, he will not make the team.
