Alexander Isak backed to join Liverpool for £135m after Newcastle United game tonight

Newcastle United are set to face Liverpool tonight without star striker Alexander Isak.

Football financial expert Stefan Borson believes Alexander Isak joining Liverpool remains the most likely option.

Newcastle United are preparing to face the champions at St James’ Park tonight. While an opening home game of the season is always a big occasion, the Isak saga has placed added pressure on the fixture.

The Swede’s future is still uncertain as he continues to down tools and train alone. Isak made it clear earlier this summer that he wants to join Liverpool.

Alexander Isak latest

Isak will play no part for Newcastle tonight, having not kicked a ball since May. In the days leading up to the game, the 25-year-old exchanged a public war of words with the club.

He accused Newcastle of breaking promises while insisting their relationship is now over. A fierce retaliation saw a club statement strongly refute Isak’s suggestions and how conditions have not been met for his sale.

Football financial expert has his say

Speaking to Football Insider, monetary guru Borson predicted Isak to end up at Liverpool by September 1 He said: “I still think the most likely scenario, and I’m only talking about likelihood, nobody can be certain as to how this is going to pan out, but I still think the most likely scenario is that he goes to Liverpool for the sorts of fee that we talked about before.

“I think that’s £125-135million fixed, and then some add-ons of £15-25million to take the package theoretically to say £150million. But it’ll probably be half of the add-ons that will require him to win the Ballon d’Or or for Liverpool to win the treble, something that’s very unlikely to occur.

“But if it does, they’ll kind of be happy to pay it. I still think that a very big transfer to Liverpool is the most likely as we sit here now because, ultimately, it’s going to be very, very hard to reintegrate the player given what’s come to pass.”

Alexander Isak fitness questioned

“It’s going to take him a month to get fit properly because he's missed the entire pre-season,” Borson added. “I do still think that’s the most likely, but it’s far from certain because it’s just going to be very difficult now given all the main targets that Newcastle have missed.

“As I say, I still think it’s most likely he will go to Liverpool, but I’d only put it at slightly over 50 per cent. I think they may well just take a view that they’ll deal with the aftermath between now and January and look at it again in January.”
