Amorim to put faith in Onana

Ruben Amorim has made a call on Manchester United’s £200,000-a-week keeper Andre Onana. He brought him back into the squad for the trip to Fulham.

Amorim brings Onana back in the picture

Manchester United fans finally have some good news between the sticks. Andre Onana was back in the travelling squad for the clash against Fulham. He missed the whole pre-season due to a hamstring injury.

He missed out against Arsenal, where Altay Bayindir started but didn’t impress,. The Turkish shot-stopper was caught out at a corner and couldn’t clear his lines. That allowed the Gunners to grab the only goal in a narrow defeat at Old Trafford.

That mistake has clearly opened the door for Onana. Head coach Ruben Amorim now feels ready to call the keeper in. His return is timely as Man Utd look to steady themselves after a tough two opening games.

🚨 Rúben Amorim confirms technical decision for Onana benched and Bayindir starting: “It's the kind of decision that the manager has to make”.

Transfer moves heating up

The decision to bring Onana back comes with bigger changes looming in United’s goalkeeping unit. Reports suggest that Belgian keeper Senne Lammens is close to sealing a £17m move from Royal Antwerp. The 23-year-old has agreed to join the Red Devils. He is expected to fight Onana for the number one spot once the deal goes through.

This potential arrival could spell the end for Bayindir. He looks likely to move on after just one season. Meanwhile, Tom Heaton remains in the frame as experienced backup. But, the focus is on whether Onana can prove his worth again. Amorim looks to build consistency at the back.

He was included in the squad, but he was benched against Fulham. Although, it does show that the manager is obviously choosing to bring him back into the frame.

Author’s Opinion

Onana’s return couldn’t come at a better time. United need stability in goal, and Amorim knows he can’t afford another shaky display like the Arsenal game. If Onana starts and delivers, it might settle the debate before Lammens even walks through the door.
