Aston Villa have been joined by a Premier League rival in the race to sign Jaydee Canvot.
The 19-year-old defender has been a target for Villa throughout the summer, and they saw a bid turned down by Toulouse earlier this month.
Toulouse are holding out for a fee of around £17 million to part with Canvot, who can play at centre-back or in midfield.
His versatility will appeal to Unai Emery, who is keen to strengthen his defensive options before the summer window closes on Monday, 1 September.
However, Villa have been restricted in this summer’s transfer window by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), as well as UEFA’s financial regulations.
As Villa have so far been unable to reach an agreement with Toulouse, Crystal Palace have emerged as a potential suitor for the youngster.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Palace have entered the race to sign Canvot after Villa’s bid was rejected.
