Former Nebraska and Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez learned Sunday evening that he will not make the New York Jets' final roster for the 2025 season.
Martinez signed with the Jets last summer and spent the 2025 season on the practice squad. There was hope entering this year that he could push for a backup role, especially with Tyrod Taylor limited and the team needing depth behind expected starter Justin Fields.
But a shaky preseason finale, including a pair of turnovers, appears to have cost Martinez his best chance yet at making an active NFL roster.
Martinez played at Nebraska from 2018 to 2021 before finishing his college career with a season at Kansas State. At Nebraska, he threw for more than 8,000 yards and 45 touchdowns while rushing for 35 more scores, though the Huskers struggled in the win-loss column. At Kansas State, Martinez found more team success, but injuries opened the door for Will Howard to take over late in the year.
No Nebraska quarterback has taken an NFL snap since 1987, when Bruce Mathison played for the Seattle Seahawks. Unless the Jets change course or another quarterback-needy team signs Martinez, that streak will continue for at least another season despite Martinez earning 2024 UFL MVP honors.
