The Minnesota Vikings had an interesting Sunday afternoon in their quarterback room. They signed Carson Wentz to a league-minimum contract and traded backup Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
They also released Brett Rypien, a move that signals former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer has done enough to make the final 53-man roster. While the roster isn’t official yet, all signs point toward Brosmer earning a spot.
Brosmer joined the Vikings as an undrafted free agent and has turned heads since day one. In all three preseason games, he completed just over 60% of his passes for 364 yards, threw two touchdowns, and had only one interception.
With Brosmer expected to make the team, Minnesota’s quarterback room is set.
First-year starter JJ McCarthy will lead the way, backed by veteran Wentz and Brosmer. It may not be the flashiest room in the league, but it’s a mix of experience and high-level processing ability.
This combination has defined Brosmer since he arrived in Minnesota.
Brosmer started all 13 games for Minnesota last season and helped the Gophers go 8-5. He threw for 2,828 yards on 18 touchdowns, while adding five rushing scores—basically showing he can do a little bit of everything.

Now Brosmer gets a chance to prove himself in the NFL, learning from Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell and competing with top-level talent. Not every undrafted rookie quarterback receives this kind of attention.
Could Brosmer be the next Brock Purdy story? Probably not, but the story shares a similar feel.
Someone overlooked, now on the verge of something big. If Brosmer can build on his preseason play, he could carve out a fundamental role in Minnesota’s offense sooner rather than later.
