Carabao cup Pre-match interview: Ward looks ahead to Round Two meeting with Burnley

Derby County’s Carabao Cup Round One hero Joe Ward says the Rams will be ready to give their all when they head to Burnley on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

The right-sider scored the equalising goal, with a spectacular late free-kick that saw Derby get through to the next round via penalty shoot-out against West Bromwich Albion earlier this month.

Following the shoot-out, the Rams were drawn against Premier League side Burnley in Round Two of the competition. The last time Derby headed to Turf Moor, they played out a goalless draw with the eventual automatic promotion winners in December 2024.

Ward spoke to RamsTV to reflect on his first-round goal and look ahead to their clash with top-flight side Burnley.

On his equalising goal in Round One…

It is definitely up there in my top goals. It was a special goal, especially with the time of the game as well, and what it meant to stay in the competition. It's important that we're all contributing, and it's what I want to keep doing, contributing with goals and assists.

On the performance at the Hawthorns after his return to fitness…

It's been a long, hard road. But I’m back in a good place, taking care of my recovery and my strength and everything that's going to keep me in a steady place. So, I'm pleased to be back and just want to contribute as much as I can, and hopefully we can push on this season and have a real good go.

On ambitions in the cup…

We want to win every game we play. That's the mentality we have. And we've got to go to Burnley and give it a good go. It's good to get those good performances in as well, because it will contribute to league performances as well.

If we can start putting good performances in, getting points, getting wins, then we can kick on in the league.
