Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker both in full agreement about Bruno Fernandes after Fulham draw, one Man Utd ace teased

Gary Lineker asked Alan Shearer a teasing question about one Manchester United star amid their discussion around Bruno Fernandes’ performance against Fulham.

Bruno Fernandes started against Fulham deep in the heart of the midfield, the same role that he played in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old United captain was once again partnered with Casemiro in the two-man midfield pivot and Fernandes saw out the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

However, Fernandes produced a deeply disappointing display over the course of United’s Premier League encounter with Fulham at Craven Cottage on the weekend.

The United midfielder failed to exert his influence and Fernandes struggled to stand out from the two-man midfield pivot in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United.

VAR summoned referee Chris Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor to review an incident involving Calvin Bassey and Mason Mount inside the Fulham box.

Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot after he looked over the challenge and Bruno Fernandes stepped up for the subsequent penalty for United at Craven Cottage.

Fernandes has impressed with his penalty record for United, but the Portugal international failed to even test Fulham shot-stopper Bernd Leno from the spot-kick.

The United skipper’s strike went straight over the bar and Premier League legend Alan Shearer was far from impressed with what he saw from Fernandes.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer told Gary Lineker: “I mean, the penalty was awful, wasn’t it?

“It doesn’t matter about that. But I think it was a penalty, probably. Yeah.”

Gary Lineker asks Alan Shearer about Bryan Mbeumo replacing Bruno Fernandes as Man Utd’s designated penalty taker

Lineker didn’t pass up the opportunity to ask Shearer if he could see Ruben Amorim swapping out Fernandes from penalties and replacing him with Bryan Mbeumo.

Responding to Shearer’s criticism of Fernandes’ penalty, Lineker reacted: “Do they put Mbeumo on penalties now?

“Because he’s so good at penalties, isn’t he? He was like last season [at Brentford], I mean, he didn’t miss.”

However, Shearer admitted that Fernandes will likely remain in the penalty role ahead of Bryan Mbeumo so long as he does not miss for the second time in a row.

Shearer told Lineker: “No, you’re allowed, I think you’re allowed to miss one, aren’t you?

“Then if you miss two on the spin, then I get you’ve got to hand it over. But you’re allowed to miss one.”

Lineker could be heard agreeing with Shearer’s assessment of the Mbeumo and Fernandes penalty situation, despite the audio issues in the podcast episode.
