Manchester United had to settle for a point in their second Premier League game of the season this weekend after being pegged back in a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
United went into the game having been encouraged by their performance by the season opener against Arsenal last week. Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat on the opening weekend, but there were some positive signs from the performance.
After a goalless first half against Fulham, which saw Bruno Fernandes miss a penalty, United took the lead in the 58th minute when defender Leny Yoro forced an Rodrigo Muniz own goal from Bryan Mbeumo’s corner.
But Fulham drew level with 17 minutes left to play through substitute Emile Smith Rowe. Both teams pushed for a winner towards the end of the game with chances coming and going, but the points were eventually shared.
The draw saw United pick up their first point of the season, with eyes now on midweek cup action. Amorim’s side have a trip to take on League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night (8pm kick-off).
United return to Premier League action next Saturday when they host newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford.
While preparations start for the two upcoming games, some members of the United squad took to social media to give their response to the draw against Fulham, and send a message to fans.
Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir shared four pictures from the game on his Instagram account and wrote: “Grateful for your support, Keep pushing together,” with a red heart emoji. The post was ‘liked’ by teammates Rasmus Hojlund, Mathijs De Ligt and Andre Onana.
There remains uncertainty about the goalkeeper situation at United with Onana named on the bench for the game. It comes amid transfer interest in Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens.
De Ligt also took to social media after the game. The defender shared two pictures and wrote: “Not the result we wanted, let’s keep pushing!”
The post was ‘liked’ by United teammates Diogo Dalot, Bryan Mbeumo, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu.
The only other United player to take to social media after the match was second half substitute Heaven. The defender posted a caption-less picture of himself during the game on his Instagram story.
