It's done. Finally, it's done.
Terry McLaurin's contract saga with the Washington Commanders has been long and frustrating. Tensions and resentment were building as the wideout felt undervalued by the franchise. But everything worked out well in the end.
Although McLaurn hadn't spoken to the Commanders for more than a month leading up to training camp, things were always going to pick up closer to the event. Some middle ground was officially reached, and Washington can now move forward with its most prolific pass-catcher under contract for the foreseeable future.
According to reports, McLaurin signed a three-year, $96 million deal**.** This brings an end to Adam Peters' one major problem before the campaign and gives the second-team All-Pro the extra financial security he was looking for.
Commanders finally did right by Terry McLaurin after long contract standoff
As expected, the collective sighs of relief from Washington's fan base on social media when the news became official were palpable. Not many were panicking too much about McLaurin not getting his money, but the player's comments to the media raised concern. He didn't seem particularly optimistic that something would get worked out, but things change quickly in the NFL.
Now, McLaurin can get back to what he does best. He's a hard worker who's been working tirelessly away from the team in pursuit of hitting the ground running when he returns. And as veteran tight end Zach Ertz said recently, the Commanders know the receiver will be at his best when his best is needed.
If the Commanders want to make another deep playoff run once again in 2025, they need McLaurin to be happy, secure, and locked in. He's the embodiment of everything good about the franchise, remaining loyal through some dark days and embracing the new culture shift led by head coach Dan Quinn fully. Nobody deserved last season's meteoric rise into contention more, and he's now got the money his production and overall influence deserve.
These things take time. The Commanders were playing hardball with something during negotiations, but a viable compromise that works for all parties was always the most realistic outcome. McLaurin is a franchise cornerstone and the beating heart of Washington football. Nothing but another deal would have sufficed.
McLaurin won't be getting complacent, either. He's heard all the disrespect in recent weeks and wants to remind the world why he's regarded as one of the league's most accomplished receivers. If anything, this money is only going to inspire him to greater heights moving forward.
That's a win-win for everybody.
