U.S. soccer star subjected to racist remarks during match in Italy

A U.S. soccer star was the target of racial abuse during an Italian soccer game.

According to a statement released by Serie A powerhouse Juventus, midfielder Weston McKennie was subjected to “discriminatory racist remarks by some individuals in the away section” during the club’s 2-0 season-opening win over Parma.

The alleged abuse occurred while McKennie was warming up.

“Juventus strongly condemns this incident and any form of racism and will ensure full cooperation with the sporting justice authorities to identify those responsible,” the statement said.

McKennie, who joined Juventus in 2020, is one of the biggest stars on the U.S. national team. He entered the match as a late substitute.

Sunday’s incident is the latest in a series of racism allegations in European soccer.

A man was arrested in Liverpool after alleged racial abuse was directed toward Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, a Black winger from Ghana, during the English Premier League’s opening match.
