Tyson Fury has revealed that he's given up watching football, favouring a day at the races instead. The ex-heavyweight boxing champion spent Bank Holiday Monday at Cartmel, where two of his horses were running.
Fury began the day by watching Big Gypsy King finish fifth out of seven runners in the 2m1f juvenile hurdle, nearly 40 lengths behind the favourite, Dignam. Before the race, he joined his manager Spencer Brown to discuss their growing interest in horse racing, which has recently been amplified by adding several more thoroughbreds to their stable.
In 25C heat, donning sunglasses and a hat, Fury told Racing TV viewers that he no longer supports Manchester United or England. The Reds are currently 16th in the Premier League after a sluggish start to the season.
"I'm not a supporter of football really," he admitted. "I used to support United but because they're in the s*** now I'm no supporter of any football teams anymore.
"I used to support England as well but when they lost to Iceland in the Euros in 2016 that was me and football completely done with. Now I'm into horse racing, get up!"
Fury also mentioned that he hasn't watched a game from Morecambe FC, the club nearest to his residence. Yesterday, The Mirror reported that the two-time world champion had sold a six-bedroom home overlooking the bay for £700,000.
The property, boasting "panoramic coastal views", was purchased by Fury and his wife Paris for £480,000 in 2015. Fury's visit to Cartmel arrived just weeks after he witnessed Big Gypsy King compete at Doncaster on the flat for his former trainer Oliver Cole.
The filly has now moved to James Moffatt, who also prepares a couple of fresh acquisitions they discovered at the sales.
Brown revealed to Racing TV: "We've got five horses together; we've got various Flat horses and three good jumps horses. She [Big Gypsy King] ran on the Flat at Doncaster two weeks ago in a 0-60 handicap, so we thought we'd give her a run out. She's been jumping for three weeks."
One of the latest arrivals at Moffatt's yard, £14,000 purchase Sea The Clouds, was also competing at Cartmel.
A victor last time out there for the partnership, this time the ride of three-time champion jump jockey Brian Hughes was withdrawn with a couple of fences remaining in the Wicks Group Cavendish Cup Handicap Chase.
Reigning titleholder Sean Bowen crossed the line first aboard 9-4 favourite Olivers Travels, a horse prepared by his brother Mickey.
The BHA confirmed the race was delayed and an update on X stated: "There will be a delay to race 4, 4:05pm on the card @Cartmelrace due to an injured horse on the track."
