Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as an ambitious target for Leeds United, MOT Leeds News understands.

Leeds United have already strengthened their midfield significantly this summer, but the injury to Ethan Ampadu has sparked concern.

The Welshman is expected to be out of action until after the September international break, which afforded Ilia Gruev a chance in Leeds’ 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.

However, the Whites are looking to add one more body to their midfield if an opportunity arises, and Mainoo could be their man.

Kobbie Mainoo could leave Man United this summer

A report from talkSPORT suggests that Mainoo would be willing to leave Man United this summer, having somewhat fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

The 20-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils this season, and MOT Leeds News understands that the Whites are considering an “ambitious” move to bring him to Elland Road on loan.

Mainoo’s last two seasons at Man United

24/25 – 37 appearances, two goals, one assist

23/24 – 32 appearances, five goals, one assist

Sources close to Leeds have suggested that the Whites had earmarked Mainoo as a soft target upon their promotion from the Championship.

At this stage, it’s unlikely that Man United would sanction a loan move to another Premier League club given his contract situation, but that could change if the player grows unsettled in the final days of the window.

Via Capology, Mainoo earns a reported £25,000 per week, though it is believed he wanted £150,000 per week to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

Who has played for Leeds and Man United in the past?

Mainoo would become one of several players to have been contracted to both Leeds and Man United if a deal does materialise this summer, though several names will shock you.

Largie Ramazani looks set to leave Leeds this summer, though he was contracted at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2020, before moving on to Almeria.

Dan James is a standout player to have featured for both, having joined Leeds in a £25million deal from the Red Devils back in 2021.

Names like Joe Rothwell, Jack Butland and Eric Cantona also feature, in what is a very short list.

If Mainoo makes the move, he would become the first in four years to achieve the feat.
