There was a point earlier in the offseason when it seemed as if LeBron James might not play the coming season with the Los Angeles Lakers. In light of opting in to his player option for the 2025-26 campaign, there was a lot of speculation that James’ relationship with Los Angeles had soured.
However, James is still with the storied franchise, and his camp allegedly understands how complicated it would be to get any trade done involving the forward.
“It has been radio silent since James, via his agent Rich Paul, attempted to rattle the Lakers’ cages immediately after exercising his $52.6 million player option for this season,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon wrote. “The all-time leading scorer and his camp understand just how complicated a trade involving him — at his age, making that much money, with the contractual right to veto any deal — would be.”
Any team that acquires James in a trade would be making a win-now move. James is already 40 years old and has just one year left on his current contract, hence it’s worth wondering if he will retire from the NBA following the coming season.
If a potential team that trades for James isn’t in a strong position to compete for a championship in the here and now, such a move could age poorly. The team wouldn’t have much room for error in the short term with James’ pro career ticking down, and there would be immense pressure to win it all from the get-go.
The fact that James has a no-trade clause on his deal means that if he were to get traded, he would likely land with a championship contender. Any trade involving James has to get his personal approval because of his no-trade clause, and it’s hard to see him giving the green light on a trade that would send him to a team that’s not in the mix.
One team that was linked to James earlier this offseason and could be connected to him in trade rumors in the coming months is the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks employ a pair of James’ former star teammates — guard Kyrie Irving and big man Anthony Davis — and they just recently selected former Duke University star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
But with all that needs to align in order for the Lakers to trade James, people shouldn’t expect it to happen anytime soon.
