Yet another Seahawks WR pushing for spot on crowded roster

There isn’t a lot of room on the 53-man roster the Seattle Seahawks for extra wide receivers, yet they have three players at the position who made strong pushes in the preseason to earn a spot.

The two obvious names are Jake Bobo and Dareke Young, both of whom stood out in the second preseason game, a win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bobo helped his case to make a Seahawks roster running out of spots

They have company, though, in Cody White, who had the highest Pro Football Focus grade (78) of all Seahawks offensive players in Saturday’s preseason finale, a 20-7 loss in Green Bay.

White led the Seahawks with 69 receiving yards on three receptions, including Seattle’s lone touchdown, an 18-yard pass from rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe in the fourth quarter. He also had a 35-yard punt return.

The 26-year-old Michigan State product has 20 games of NFL experience, including four games with the Seahawks last season.

The combination of White’s play Saturday and his contributions for the team last year has Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard thinking he’s in the mix to make the initial roster that the Seahawks have to set this week (the NFL deadline is 1 p.m. Tuesday).

“I think Cody White gave himself a chance to make this football team,” said Huard, a longtime football analyst and former NFL QB. “Cody White last year, when given opportunities, just really seized them on special teams. He’s been unbelievably competent. We have watched him be available all offseason long through the OTAs and the training camps.”

It’s far from a guarantee that the 6-foot-3, 227-pound White will get a spot on the roster, but he’s put himself in the same conversation with Bobo and Young.

“Does he have, like, one unique trait? Is he an overwhelming player? Does he have elite twitch and speed? No,” Huard continued. “But he’s kind of in that Dareke and Bobo camp of doing everything right and basically forcing the coaches’ hand.

“So he ends up being the highest-graded offensive player on the team (per PFF for Saturday), and I think that effort is going to give him a real fighting chance to make this roster over the next 24 hours.”

Brock Huard answers three football questions at 7:45 a.m. during the Blue 88 segment of Brock and Salk. Catch Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk live from 6-10 a.m. weekdays.
