Seahawks’ Jalen Milroe taking a very different path than Anthony Richardson

The Seattle Seahawks spent a lot of time tinkering with their offense this offseason. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was fired, quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver DK Metcalf were traded, and fan-favorite Tyler Lockett was released. Big losses, but possibly needed.

Now, Seattle has Klint Kubiak as OC, Sam Darnold as QB1, and Cooper Kupp as WR2. The team also signed veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency. He was expected to be WR3 based on his explosive ability and experience. He was a 30-year-old receiver with a lot of speed.

[The problem with MVS](https://12thmanrising.com/seattle-seahawks-predicted-trade-recent-free-agent-wr-signing) is that he is an all-or-nothing wideout. He can score an 80-yard touchdown and then become invisible for two quarters. Seattle might have buyer's remorse now, at least based on how the team approached the final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling is certainly no lock to make the Seattle Seahawks 53-man roster

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Seahawks didn't play their starters. Receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp sat out, as there was no reason to risk them to a meaningless injury. Rookie receiver Tory Horton might have used the reps, even though he has had a tremendous training camp, but he was nursing an ankle injury. The hope is that he is ready for Week 1.

But Valdes-Scantling played and played a lot. The odd part is that the veteran shouldn't truly need the practice. That he played as much as he did (he caught all three of his targets against the backups of backups for the Packers) implied that general manager John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald aren't sold on MVS being on the roster.

Jake Bobo, Dareke Young, and Cody White all played in the final preseason game, and that makes sense. While Bobo is almost certainly going to make the team, White and Young might be battling for the final roster spot at receiver. MVS might be among that group, too.

He has been banged up in camp and has been badly outperformed by Horton. Valdes-Scantling also doesn't provide the special teams value that Bobo, Young, or White bring. In other words, MVS is a one-note wide receiver, and the Seahawks need versatility.

Does he make the team? Maybe. The team might be hoping they find a trade partner for him. What is crystal clear is that the Seattle Seahawks aren't positive that Marquez Valdes-Scantling is a lock to make [the final 53-man roster](https://12thmanrising.com/seattle-seahawks-final-53-man-roster-prediction-cuts-ties-failed-gambles). If Seattle can't trade him, it might just release him.
