Mainoo has had to sit on the bench in United’s first two league games and has not been given a single minute by Amorim so far. Amorim has indicated that Mainoo will face tough competition from a captain like Bruno Fernandes, and Fernandes is very important in his system.
Mainoo came out of United’s academy and was given a chance in the senior team for the first time by Erik ten Hag in January 2023. Since then, the English midfielder has been considered a big hope for the club’s future. He has played 72 matches for United so far and has scored seven goals. The question now is what the club should do. If a big offer comes in, it will be difficult for the management to decide whether to sell Mainoo or not. In our opinion, it is not right to sell a talented player just because he did not get a chance in the first two games.
Amorim’s faith in Bruno Fernandes is understandable, but it is also true that Fernandes will not play forever, and United will have to think about the future. Instead of selling Mainoo out, he should be gradually given a place in the team.
If the 20-year-old goes to a club like Chelsea, he may get a chance to play in the early stages, but there will be no less pressure and competition. United has shaped him; he has his identity here, and only by staying here can he become a real star.
