According to ESPN, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived rookie safety Shilo Sanders. Sanders went undrafted out of Colorado, the brother of former Colorado star Shedeur Sanders. The Sanders family had a strange draft, but the expectation around the NFL entering the 2025 NFL Draft was that he’d go undrafted.
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers informed rookie safety Shilo Sanders on Sunday that he is being waived, his agents told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told Schefter that they hope Sanders gets claimed on waivers,”they wrote.
Would the Browns Consider Signing Shilo Sanders?
With Sanders now looking for another team, some believe the Cleveland Browns should be in the mix. The Browns already roster one Sanders, and critics question whether Deion Sanders might interfere, making it tricky to add another family member.
Still, Matthew Schmidt of Sports Illustrated believes the Browns could pursue him after his release.
“The Cleveland Browns could afford to add some depth to their secondary. Not only is cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. out for the season, but the Browns’ talent at the safety position leaves much to be desired.
“Enter Shilo Sanders, who was just waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following his decision to throw a punch in his team’s exhibition loss to the Buffalo Bills,”he wrote.
Should Cleveland Have Second Thoughts About Shilo Sanders?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Sanders after he threw a punch on Saturday night, allowing the Cleveland Browns to sign him. Throwing a punch in a preseason game costs him a spot while he was fighting to make the roster.
For the Browns, they’ll have to listen to coaches like Todd Bowles, who had the following to say about what Sanders did.
“You can’t throw punches in this league. It’s inexcusable. They’re gonna get you every time,”Bowles said, per FOX. “You gotta grow from that.”
Browns Do Need Secondary Help
The Cleveland Browns need help in their defensive back room, and Pro Football Network suggests they should target the former Colorado player.
However, it’s also fair to wonder if Sanders has any potential to be something in the NFL. Unlike Shedeur, who has proven throughout his young career that he could be a potential player in the league, Sanders hasn’t exactly proven that.
“Cleveland selected Sanders’ brother, Shedeur Sanders, in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Shedeur has acquitted himself well during training camp and his one start in the preseason, but would the Browns want to bring in another member of the Sanders family?
“The team’s safety room is anchored by Grant Delpit and Ronnie Hickman, who was an undrafted free agent in 2023. Hickman is one of the projected starters, and that story should give Shilo motivation to work hard wherever he lands,”Scott DiBenedetto wrote.
It’ll be intriguing to see what the Browns want to do, but adding another Sanders to the roster could further complicate things. Nonetheless, they could be looking to buy low on a player and potentially get a bang for their buck with this type of signing.
