The £20m ex-Manchester United star who played for Carabao Cup opponents Grimsby Town

Manchester United enter the Carabao Cup in the second round as Ruben Amorim’s side won’t be competing in Europe this season.

The Red Devils are aiming to bounce back after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign.

Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to win a trophy for the first time in three seasons, despite reaching the Europa League final in Bilbao.

United reached the FA Cup fifth round and suffered elimination again after reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

That means Amorim goes into his first full season looking to land a piece of silverware for the first time as United head coach.

United drew Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round, and the game will take place on Tuesday, August 26. The Reds will go to Blundell Park as clear favourites to qualify for the third round.

Although United have not played against Grimsby Town since 1948, there are a few connections between the two clubs.

Dean Henderson enjoyed five loan spells during his time at Manchester United, after emerging from the club’s established academy.

Following a short temporary spell at Stockport County in 2016, Henderson was sent to Grimsby Town to gain first-team experience in League Two.

However, Henderson started his Grimsby Town career as second-choice goalkeeper behind James McKeown and had made wait until December to make his debut in a 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley.

Henderson’s performance was praised by then-manager Marcus Bignot and his loan deal was extended until the end of January 2017.

The United loanee went on to keep a second clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Blackpool.

Henderson’s deal was extended again until the end of the 2016/17 season, but he was recalled by United in February, due to an injury to third-choice keeper Joel Pereira. He made a total of seven appearances and kept four clean sheets for Grimsby Town.

After winning the FA Cup with Crystal Palace last season, Henderson was key behind their penalty shootout win over Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend.

Grimsby Town full-back played for United

The Carabao Cup second round tie between Grimsby Town and United presents an opportunity for one player to perform against his former club.

Tyrell Warren came through United’s academy before joining Salford City in 2019.

He later signed for Boston United, FC Halifax Town, Barrow and joined Grimsby Town last year.

Warren will hope to line up against United at the end of August.
