Aston Villa could make a “huge” profit if they were to sell Morgan Rogers following interest from Tottenham.

Football Insider revealed on 3 August Villa are doing everything they can to keep Rogers after he’s been linked with an exit this summer.

Villa are set to offer Rogers a new contract despite his current deal running until 2030, having only put pen to paper over a new deal last November.

The England international has been a standout player for Unai Emery’s side since joining in a deal worth £8million plus a potential £7million in add-ons from Middlesbrough in January 2024.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (25 August) Tottenham are readying a late-window move to sign Rogers after holding preliminary discussions over a potential deal ahead of the transfer deadline on 1 September.

This article contains exclusive comment fromStefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Villa sold academy product Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United this month in a £40million deal as they look to improve their financial position.

The West Midlands giants were fined £9.5million last month for breaching Uefa’s financial rules, while they have also faced issues complying with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a potential exit for Rogers, Borson said: “I think it’s pretty unlikely.

“Clearly, if they were to do it, they’re going to make a huge Uefa financial fair play profit, right?

“That is going to fix quite a few issues that they’ve got on that side of things, but they’d be sacrificing their best young player.

“You’d just think that’s surely not going to happen.

“I’d be really surprised if they sold Morgan Rogers and I actually think two things.

“One, probably there’ll be other bidders if he is on the market, even now. And secondly, with the best will in the world, will he see Spurs as a move that he wants to make?

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he just thinks that’s not the upgrade I’m looking for.”

Emiliano Martinez makes Aston Villa transfer U-turn

In terms of other transfer activity, Football Insider revealed on Sunday (24 August) Emery has no plans to let Emiliano Martinez leave Villa before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

The Argentina international previously looked certain to join a new club this summer, but a move has failed to materialise.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper played in Villa’s defeat against Brentford on Saturday (23 August).
