Leeds United handed significant boost as VAR intervenes tonight in Newcastle United v Liverpool

Leeds United’s home clash with Newcastle United could spell trouble, but the Magpies attack will be looking short of star talent.

A win at home was the perfect start for Leeds back in the Premier League, but they were brought swiftly back down to Earth by Arsenal.

5-0 was the scoreline and with it comes more scepticism about Leeds’ chances of being competitive against the best sides in the division – up next, more Champions League opposition in Newcastle United at Elland Road.

Leeds United handed Anthony Gordon boost as he’s sent off for Newcastle v Liverpool

The Magpies’ first home game has brought a serious siege mentality against Liverpool, the side that have plunged their front line into doubt with Alexander Isak currently on strike as he eyes a move to Anfield.

An intense start to the first half at St James’ Park saw strong tackles and fouls aplenty from both sides, as the Reds took the lead through Ryan Gravenberch’s fine strike.

However, it boiled over when Anthony Gordon flew in late on Virgil van Dijk, scraping down the centre-back’s ankle and was initially booked, before VAR intervened and Simon Hooper dished out a straight red.

Anthony Gordon has been sent off.

Gordon was given his marching orders and will now miss the fixture at Elland Road, pending any possible appeal (success is unlikely, it was a shocker).

Leeds United need their luck against Newcastle – no Gordon or Isak would be ideal

Leeds are going to need everything to go their way against the sides at the top, including Newcastle this Saturday.

So, to have them missing Gordon as well as potentially Isak being left out is really beneficial.

That’s not to say it’ll be a breeze, because they looked outstanding before Liverpool’s sucker-punch for 0-1, and they will want a reaction if they lose tonight (as it stands, they might).
