Premier League referee Simon Hooper explained why he overturned his on-field decision before handing Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon a red card in the first half of the clash with Liverpool at St James' Park. The home side had dominated the opening stages before Ryan Gravenberch put Liverpool ahead with 35 minutes on the clock.

Newcastle, who had been fired up going into the match due to the transfer saga involving the two clubs and Alexander Isak, thundered into a number of challenges before Gordon caught Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk high on the thigh on the stroke of half-time.

Hooper initially showed the former Everton forward a yellow card but after being sent to the screen by VAR, decided instead to send him off with Van Dijk down hurt.

And the Premier League official confirmed the decision on the pitch, with referees speaking on a microphone to the stadium in new rules brought in for the 2025/26 season.

Hooper said: "After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge.

"The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf. My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10.”
