Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has told Anthony Gordon the challenge he made on Virgil van Dijk was stupid.

The former Everton man was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Liverpool captain Van Dijk in the closing stages of the first half of the clash at St James’ Park.

However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) recommended referee Simon Hooper go to the screen and review the decision.

After seeing replays, the decision was made to upgrade the card from yellow to red. In his on-pitch announcement, Hooper explained: “After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge. The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf. My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10.”

Responding on social media to the challenge Shearer made his feelings clear. He wrote: “What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day.” His post also included three angry face emojis.

Sky Sports’ Co-commentator Chris Sutton agreed, saying: "Does he catch him high? It's a wild challenge. Every time you see it, it gets worse. I'll be surprised if he stays on. It was an unnecessary challenge."

As well as missing the remainder of the match against Liverpool, the red card also means that Gordon will be suspended for the next three games.

It means he will miss the Premier League games against Leeds, Wolves and Bournemouth.
