The Detroit Lions have officially decided to part ways with 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker.
On Monday afternoon, the Lions reportedly decided to part ways with Hooker after he was competing for the backup quarterback spot with veteran Kyle Allen. The decision came down to Hooker’s performance in the preseason, and Hooker struggled in comparison to how Allen played as a more experienced quarterback.
That news was first shared by NFL insider Jordan Schultz:
The former Tennessee star will be sent to waivers and can be claimed by any team in the league that wants help at the quarterback position. Due to having less than four years of experience in the NFL, he has to go through waivers before he is eligible to return to the Lions on their practice squad.
In four appearances, Hooker finished the preseason 22-of-40 for 187 yards, no touchdowns, three interceptions, and two fumbles. He led just one scoring drive over that time frame. Meanwhile, Allen finished 35-of-44 for 401 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Hooker will hope to sign with an NFL franchise to continue his pro career. He made 3 appearances with the Lions last season as a backup after they took him with a 3rd round pick back in the 2023 draft.
