Newcastle United were up against it the moment Anthony Gordon was sent off after a crazy challenge in the first half but almost pulled off a sensational result
William Osula celebrates his equaliser against Liverpool
Newcastle United suffered late heartache against Liverpool at St James' Park - after a battling response following Anthony Gordon's red card.
Newcastle fell behind on 35 minutes after Ryan Gravenberch's long range effort beat Nick Pope from 25 yards before Hugo Ekitike doubled that advantage at the start of the second period just seconds after the restart.
Just before the hour though United pulled a goal back when Tino Livramento's throw was half-cleared by the Reds before the full-back's cross found the head of Bruno Guimaraes who made it 2-1.
William Osula's equaliser looked to have scrambled a point for the Magpies after he poked home from Nick Pope's long thump upfield. However, in the 99th minute, Liverpool's 16-year-old substitute Rio Ngumoha was left unmarked at the far post to sweep home the winner on his Premier League debut.

Here's how the players rated against the Reds:
Nick Pope 7
Rooted to the spot for the first goal, didn't close to the second. But still made some key saves and provided an assist of thoughts to allow Osula to poke home!
Kieran Trippier 6
A difficult night in which he was drawn into fouls by Liverpool.
Fabian Schar 6
Reacted slowly after blocking Gakpo shot before Ekitike followed up. Will need to improve to hold on to his place with Thiaw on the scene.
Dan Burn 8
A towering display as he cleared time after time. Caused a nusiance of himself before Osula's goal!
Tino Livramento 8
Arguably Newcastle's most effective player, providing a constant threat and an assist.
Bruno Guimaraes 8
Played his heart out and grabbed the goal that gave everybody hope.
Joelinton 6
Battled hard before going off with a knock. Will have more effective nights.
Sandro Tonali 7
A good battling display before being forced off with a knock. Could be argued he let Hugo Ekitike slip through midfield for second goal but an otherwise decent effort.
Harvey Barnes 5
One decent cross for Gordon in the first half but not much else to write home about. No surprise to see his number come up.
Anthony Elanga 7
Put in half a dozen crosses and offered a threat in the latter stages.
Anthony Gordon 4
Had his fair share of chances before a red card that left his team-mates short-handed. Given Newcastle's plight with a lack of forwards it was a crazy challenge.
