Anthony Gordon was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
Alan Shearer has taken aim at Anthony Gordon after he was sent off against Liverpool. The Newcastle United forward was shown a red card for a challenge on Virgil van Dijk, but that only tells half of the story.
The former Everton man was initially booked for the challenge, but following a VAR review, referee Simon Hooper upgraded the yellow card to a red. Explaining his decision, he said: "After review, the Newcastle United number 10 commits a serious foul play challenge. The challenge is with speed and makes clear contact on the Liverpool number 4's calf. My final decision is red card to Newcastle United number 10."
And reacting to the red card, Shearer wrote on X: “What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day.”
While Sky Sports co-commentator Chris Sutton said: "Does he catch him high? It's a wild challenge. Every time you see it, it gets worse. I'll be surprised if he stays on. It was an unnecessary challenge."
And former Reds defender Jamie Carragher said: "It's daft from Gordon. He was the best player on the pitch before that."
A stoppage-time winner from Rio Ngumoha secured the Reds all three points after Newcastle came from behind in the second-half.
Liverpool had raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike.
But goals from Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula drew the hosts level before Ngumoha struck in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
