AFC contender cuts ex-Patriots quarterback

Bailey Zappe won’t make Kansas City’s first 53-man roster this season.

Ahead of Tuesday’s cut down day, the Chiefs have waived Zappe, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Now 26 years old, Zappe was a Patriots fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft who once ignited a quarterback controversy with Mac Jones.

Over the course of his first two seasons in Foxborough, Zappe started eight games and appeared in 14. As the Bill Belichick era wound down, Zappe was 4-4 as a starter, but threw 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He was released during New England’s final cuts last August.

After being waived by the Patriots, Zappe signed with Kansas City’s practice squad. He was poached by the Browns in October, signed to their active roster. Zappe finished the season in Cleveland, starting their Week 18 loss to the Ravens, and then re-signed with the Chiefs in March.

If Zappe clears waivers, he could once again rejoin Kansas City’s practice squad, or he’s free to sign anywhere else. Patrick Mahomes, Garden Minshew and Chris Oladokun are the other quarterbacks on the Chiefs depth chart.
