Officials identify 2 killed after ATV crashes into watery ditch along rural Minnesota road

Two people were killed when their ATV crashed along a road in Minnesota after dark and went into a watery ditch, officials said.

A 911 caller alerted officials around 9:20 p.m. Saturday to the wreck about 15 miles west of Cloquet on Ditch Bank Forest Road in Progress Township, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office said.

Law enforcement and emergency medical personnel arrived to find two people dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials on Monday identified the victims as Glen Alan Burdick, 59, of Homestead, Iowa, and Lisa Jo Westendorf, 48, of Cloquet.

Burdick was believed to be operating the ATV at the time, said Sheriff Kelly Lake.

The two were riding in a side-by-side ATV “and got separated from the group of other riders they were with,” a Sheriff’s Office statement read.

The ATV overturned in water, and attempts by people in the group to revive the pair were unsuccessful, the statement continued.
