Arsenal have had an ideal beginning to the new Premier League season.
They picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win at Manchester United before a 5-0 rout of Leeds United at home.
The Gunners face holders Liverpool at Anfield this weekend before the international break.
Ahead of the encounter, Wayne Rooney has heaped praise on Max Dowman on his new BBC Podcast.
The Manchester United legend said: “To play at that age in the Premier League is crazy. I know I played when I was young, but I think he’s like 150 days younger than I was or more.
“It’s just refreshing to see a young lad get his opportunity, and, even though he’s playing for Arsenal, every time he cuts inside you go ‘shoot’. You want him to put it in the top corner.”
Rooney was also relieved that Dowman did not take the penalty won by him. The 39-year-old feels there would have been unwarranted online criticism had he squandered the spot kick.
He added: “If he gets it and scores, it’s great, but I was thinking if he misses that’s the difference in being an absolute success story and… all of sudden you get everyone, not everyone, but online people having a go at him.
“So I was really pleased he didn’t, but it was such an impressive debut.”
Dowman made a big impression during pre-season. He had several lively cameo appearances and won a couple of penalties against Newcastle United and Villarreal.
The 15-year-old carried over the good form for his Arsenal debut against Leeds at the Emirates Stadium. He was introduced shortly after the hour mark from the right wing position.
The youngster caught the eye with his movement, dribbling and physicality. He was not overawed by the occasion and won an impressive five ground duels and 100 percent of his tackles (2/2).
Dowman had a couple of wayward attempts on goal. He eventually made his mark by winning a late stoppage-time penalty to send Arsenal to the top of the table on goal difference.
It was a glowing debut for the teenager. He could have some part to play at Anfield next weekend, considering Bukayo Saka is on the sidelines with a hamstring concern.
The England international could be out for up to a month with the setback.
