According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Denver Broncos have waived running back Blake Watson with an injury settlement. Watson suffered a PCL strain during their preseason finale victory over the Saints and now will hit the waiver wire. Fowler notes that Watson was receiving some trade interest before this injury, so we’ll see if he gets claimed or not. Reports [indicate that they would like Watson back on the practice squad](https://x.com/christomasson/status/1960111671956951299).
Watson made the 53-man roster last season as an undrafted free agent and showed some promise in very limited snaps. He carried that over into the preseason, where he looked explosive, was able to make defenders miss while running with power, and has pass-catching upside. He checks a lot of boxes that Sean Payton looks for, but even then, it seemed like a long shot to make the 53-man roster. The fact that he was receiving some trade calls shows that the league took notice of his abilities as well.
We will see if he clears waivers or not since the injury may complicate things and if he does, I believe he is a strong practice squad canadidate and one the team may prefer over Estime.
With Watson and Estime both waived, that leaves Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie as the lone backs behind J.K. Dobbins and rookie R.J. Harvey. Barring a surprise, I believe both backs will make the team, but you never know how things will shake out this time of the year.
It’s totally possible the Broncos could look at the waiver wire and find a back they believe is better than someone on their roster. We’ll see how things shake out, but for now, I believe McLaughlin and Badie have a good shot of making the 53-man roster.
