Winning the preseason finale on Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers is an early feel-good story for the San Francisco 49ers. The five-time Super Bowl winners have championship aspirations once again after losing in the championship game two seasons ago and missing the playoffs last year.
On Tuesday, Aug. 26, the deadline hits for all 32 NFL teams to trim [their roster down to 53 players](https://ninernoise.com/final-49ers-53-man-roster-projection-one-surprise-cut). That potentially means 1,200 athletes will be looking for work and a new place to call home this season.
Within the NFC West, three other teams are in the same boat as the Niners. The Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Seattle Seahawks all have to make the same difficult decisions of who stays on and who gets cut.
Here are three players that San Francisco could scoop from those three teams to fill out their own roster.
1\. Trey Wedig, OT (Los Angeles Rams)
-------------------------------------
The Rams [already have released](https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-roster-cuts-tracking-player-releases-ahead-of-the-2025-roster-deadline) the undrafted training camp invitee, offensive tackle Trey Wedig. In the case of Wedig, he is a young offensive lineman with size.
At 6-foot-7' and 330 pounds, Wedig's presence would benefit quarterback Brock Purdy by protecting him from opposing teams' blitz packages.
An additional perk to the available offensive tackle is that he played college football at Indiana University. That's the same program from which the Niners drafted quarterback Kristian Rourke last April, and the Hoosier connection can only help in the locker room, even if it's just at the practice squad level.
2\. Steven Sims, WR (Seattle Seahawks)
--------------------------------------
The 28-year-old Steven Sims may not be in the Hawks' plans this season. That could work in favor of the 49ers with a banged-up wide receiver corps.
Brandon Aiyuk is still out for a couple months recovering from ACL surgery. Demarcus Robinson is suspended for San Francisco's first three games by the league, adding further strain on the receiver depth chart.
That leaves head coach Kyle Shanahan to trust second-year players and a rookie in a vital spot. Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing did not get the as many reps or targets as wideout Jauan Jennings or tight end George Kittle did last season.
That could easily change as Shanahan may have to rely on rookie Jordan Watkins some, too. Signing Sims to the roster gives a veteran receiver who has shown skills on special teams, as well.
The Houston, Texas, native ran back a punt 67 yards for a score in the divisional round against the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs two seasons ago. Special teams is another area of the game that Lynch and Shanahan would not be against upgrading as Sims covers the 49ers in both spots.
3\. Elijah Jones, CB (Arizona Cardinals)
----------------------------------------
Adding depth is never a bad thing. Earlier in the year during free agency, safety Talanoa Hufanga (Denver Broncos) and cornerback Charvarius Ward (Indianapolis Colts) left the team, depleting the secondary in a signficant way.
If cornerback Elijah Jones gets cut by NFC West division foe Arizona, the Cardinals' loss could be the 49ers' gain. San Francisco would get a 6-foot-1' defender downfield. At only 25 years old, the former Boston College defensive back has time to still grow in the league.
After Jones' final season at the college level, he ended his career as an Eagle with 156 tackles, 36 passes defended, and seven interceptions. That level of production could be what San Francisco's defense needs to complement incumbent defensive backs like Ji'Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha, and Deommodore Lenoir.
The deadline for all roster cut is 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
