Liverpool's Ngumoha emulates Rooney feat in dramatic win over Newcastle

Liverpool starlet Rio Ngumoha followed in Wayne Rooney's footsteps with his 100th-minute winner in Monday's thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park.

The Reds looked set to enjoy a stress-free evening at St James' Park when Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike scored either side of an Anthony Gordon red card.

To Newcastle's credit, they staged a spirited fightback despite being a man light, with Bruno Guimaraes reducing the deficit before William Osula netted an 88th-minute equaliser.

However, just as Newcastle thought they had rescued a point, Ngumoha came off the bench to snatch all three points with a dramatic winner in the 10th minute of stoppage time.

Ngumoha emulates Rooney feat with late winner

As a result of his first senior goal, Ngumoha joined an exclusive club with former Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney.

The youngster became the second 16-year-old to score a winner in a Premier League match, after Rooney previously achieved the feat against Arsenal in 2002.

Rooney famously came off the bench to fire a long-range strike over David Seaman and in off the underside of the crossbar, with his effort sealing a memorable 2-1 victory over Arsene Wenger's side at Goodison Park.

At 16 years and 361 days, Ngumoha scored his winner just one day older than Rooney was when he netted his iconic goal against the Gunners.

Ngumoha is also now the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, behind Rooney, James Milner and James Vaughan.

Liverpool equal goalscoring record

Meanwhile, Liverpool have scored in each of their last 36 Premier League matches since they drew a blank in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in September 2024.

That impressive streak has seen the Reds equal their longest scoring run in top-flight matches, replicating their 36-game scoring streak from March 2019 to February 2020.

Arne Slot's side have also netted seven goals across their first two matches of the new season after beating Bournemouth 4-2 on the opening day of the campaign.

The Reds will look to put their firepower to good use when they welcome potential title rivals Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday.
