The Washington Commanders just completed their most successful season in over 30 years. Unsurprisingly, the first full offseason and regular season away from the supervision of disgraced owner Dan Snyder led to a conference championship appearance.

Washington’s impressive season was led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who quickly became the franchise’s white knight. Much of his success was thanks to wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who was long believed to possess elite skill, but finally got to show it with Daniels.

The veteran receiver had a career year last year, reeling in nearly 1,100 yards and a whopping 13 touchdowns. With this level of production, McLaurin felt it was only right that he be awarded with an extension, but unfortunately the Commanders were unwilling to fork over the money.

Earlier today it was reported that the two sides finally came to terms on a new deal and Daniels was ecstatic to say the least.

Washington traded for Deebo Samuel from the San Francsico 49ers this offseason, so if McLaurin were to miss time, the team wouldn’t be completely hopeless at receiver. But McLaurin is one of the most important leaders on the team, and it would be hard for Daniels to have a repeat of last season without a receiver he’d built so much chemistry with.

This move for the Commanders is a clear doubling down on the core of players they have, telling teams that they are confident with their team as is. Daniels will need to stave off the dreaded sophomore slump if he wishes to build off last season.
