Pittsburgh Steelers release preseason star running back

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released running back Lew Nichols, who became a preseason sensation for the team.

Nichols was signed after some injuries racked up in the running back room in July, and he quickly made his name known during the team’s preseason games.

Over three games, Nichols finished with 11 rushes for 87 yards and five receptions for 36 yards. It is likely he will come back around on the practice squad as long as he does not get claimed by a team.

From 2019 to 2022, Nichols was a star running back at Central Michigan, topping the NCAA’s list for rushing yards in the 2021 season with over 1700 rushing yards. That season, Nicholas had nine games of 100 or more rushing yards. He was named the MAC Player of the Year.

All that work was enough to get him drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but he failed to make their roster, and the Eagles scooped him up shortly after that.

He spent all of last season with the Eagles and most of this offseason before being cut. Nichols has not played in an NFL game, but he can return kicks in addition to being a running back.
