On Monday,NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers requested a trade after the two sides could not negotiate a new contract.
So, where could Meyers go? CBS Sports’ John Breech mentioned a couple of landing spots for the player. One is the Minnesota Vikings, who are actively looking for a wide receiver.
“They’ve been in talks with the Panthers,”Breech said on CBS Sports HQ. “They’ve been trying to do a reunion with Adam Thielen, but nothing has happened on that front just yet. And so why not call up the Raiders and bring in Jakobi Meyers? They have some short-term issues right now.”
Why Would the Vikings Want Jakobi Meyers?
Breech mentions that the Vikings have a couple of short-term hurdles that they need to overcome to start the season. While Justin Jefferson will likely play Week 1, he’s dealing with an injury, and Jordan Addison faces a three-game suspension to start the campaign.
“They know Jordan Addison is not going to be available for the first three games of the season. You look at Justin Jefferson,” Breech added. “Yes, he’s going to be out on the field in week one, but he missed a good chunk of training camp with that hamstring injury. And as we all know, hamstrings can be a difficult injury to deal with.
“Those can flare up at any time, and when you’re running routes on every single play, you don’t know how well that injury is going to hold up throughout the season. So, adding someone like Jakobi Meyers would just give them some receiving insurance that you want to have when you have a first-year starting quarterback in J.J. McCarthy.”
Minnesota have to hit the ground running as they are a team that won 14 games last season and reached the playoffs. Furthermore, it’s a squad built to win now, and while they are looking to ease the second-year quarterback into the starting job, he faces pressure to keep the postseason aspirations going.
As a result, it makes sense for the Vikings to supply McCarthy with as many weapons as possible to ensure that he can have an impressive season and build his confidence as the Michigan product is their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
What Could the Raiders Ask For?
In his two seasons with the Silver and Black, Meyers has experienced a career high each campaign. In 2023, he recorded a career high in touchdowns with eight, and then in 2024, the 28-year-old crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time in his career.
Several wide receivers have moved this offseason, including Deebo Samuel Sr., DK Metcalf, and George Pickens. Nonetheless, Breech revealed a realistic trade demand for the receiver.
“Everybody has a price,” Breech said. “So, if some team were to call the Raiders up and offer a third-round pick, I think that absolutely gets the deal done, but that would probably be overpaying. So, maybe the situation is where a team calls up and offers a fourth-round pick.”
