Newcastle United suffered a heartbreaking last-minute defeat to Liverpool on Monday night. Anthony Gordon was sent off just before half-time for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk, while Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula found the net for the hosts in the 3-2 defeat.

Off the pitch, Eddie Howe’s side have been active in the summer transfer window, with Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, and Malick Thiaw strengthening the squad. The future of Alexander Isak, though, has been a hot topic this summer, but the club hierarchy has been adamant he is not for sale.

Liverpool have already seen a £110million bid for the Swedish striker rejected, while Newcastle had a £50m offer for Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen turned down as they look to replace Callum Wilson

With that said, Chronicle Live has taken a look at the latest headlines from in and around St James' Park.

Isak 'talks'

Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben and a PIF delegation visited Isak at his home, prior to the clash against Liverpool, in an effort to persuade him to remain at St James' Park.

According to the Daily Mail, the club's preference is for the Swede to return to training and play for the team again.

The report also claims that if Isak commits his future to the club this season, then discussions would also include the prospect of a new contract.

Chronicle Live says: The club are making every effort to reintegrate Isak into the squad as the transfer window enters its final days. With uncertainty surrounding his future, Howe and Co. know they may now need the striker's return more than ever. The situation has become even more pressing after Gordon’s red card, which will see him miss the next three matches.

'Advanced negotiations' for Jackson

[Journalist Sacha Tavolieri](https://twitter.com/sachatavolieri/status/1958845046712594734?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 22, 2025 ) is reporting that Newcastle are being considered as a potential destination for Nicolas Jackson.

The 24-year-old is expected to leave Chelsea this summer, and Tavolieri claims that the Magpies are prepared to meet the player's conditions and are engaged in advanced negotiations to finalise the deal.

Chronicle Live says: Time is running out, and the urgency has increased with Gordon's suspension. Newcastle face a challenging run of fixtures against Leeds United, Wolves, and Bournemouth, and missing a key attacker could result in dropped points that prove costly over the course of the season. As Jackson continues to be linked with a move to Tyneside, now may be the perfect opportunity for the club to complete a swoop.
