Newcastle United suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool on Monday night.

Eddie Howe's side fought valiantly with 10 men against the reigning Premier League champions and battled back from 2-0 down to draw level. However, Rio Ngumoha's late winner in stoppage time was enough to snatch a precious point away from the Magpies at St James' Park.

Newcastle will now need to recover quickly as they look towards Saturday's trip to Leeds United (5:30pm kick-off UK time), with Howe's men still chasing their first three points of the season. The Magpies will also have several injury concerns going into their weekend trip to Elland Road.

Sandro Tonali was forced off in the second half with what looked to be an arm injury. The Italian has been ever-present in midfield but now faces a possible spell on the sidelines.

Likewise, Joelinton also picked up an injury in the second 45 - handing Howe another blow in midfield.

To make matters worse, key centre-back Fabian Schar was forced off with concussion and also faces a race to be fit for Saturday's game in West Yorkshire.

"They are genuine injuries," Magpies boss Howe said post-match. "Joey [Joelinton] doesn't look great to be honest.

"Sandro doesn't look good, he couldn't move his arm. He wanted to stay on. Fabian had concussion so we will lose him."

Defenders Sven Botman and Lewis Hall, meanwhile, are working their way back to fitness, as is midfielder Joe Willock.

All three could potentially have to step up against Daniel Farke's team in just four days' time.

Matters have been made even worse by Anthony Gordon's sending off on Monday.

The forward will now be absent from Newcastle's next three matches after receiving a straight red card for serious foul play.

It means he will miss the trip to Leeds and the home game against Wolves on September 13.

The 24-year-old will be available in Europe for Newcastle's Champions League opener in the week commencing September 15.

But he will then miss their Premier League away match at Bournemouth on September 20.

He will then return domestically for Newcastle's Carabao Cup third-round tie in the week commencing September 22.
