Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk scored highest out of Liverpool’s starters in the 3-2 win at Newcastle, but Ibrahima Konate struggled again.
The Reds secured the most dramatic of three points at St James’ Park on Monday night, with Rio Ngumoha scoring the 100th-minute winner to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer.
Here we compare our player ratings with those of TIA’s readers, the Liverpool Echo and GOAL.
Szoboszlai (7.48) was the best of the Reds’ starters, shining in an auxiliary right-back role and producing a wonderful dummy that allowed Ngumoha to score.
The Hungarian worked so hard in a rare position, according to the Echo‘s Ian Doyle, as he showcased his versatility.
Van Dijk (7.23) was also good at the back, leading to Mills to say that he “led by example” for the Premier League champions.
The Dutchman’s influence was particularly important because Konate (4.25) was poor on the night, scoring lowest for Liverpool.
What the stats say
With help from our friends at FotMob, Van Dijk’s dominance was outlined by him making more defensive contributions (15) than any player on the pitch.
Milos Kerkez (nine) was Liverpool’s second-best player in that area, outlining how much the captain outshone his teammates in a defensive sense.
Van Dijk also led the way with a monstrous 14 clearances – we almost take his brilliance for granted at times!
A word of praise for Cody Gakpo, too, who bagged an assist for Hugo Ekitike‘s goal and won nine duels, which was more than his Liverpool colleagues.
It was the 26-year-old who got FotMob’s highest rating of 8.6 for the Reds, as he battled for the cause.
