Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has never been shy or reserved in his public praise of Lamine Yamal, but he might have just given his strongest statement yet about the club’s teenage superstar.
Speaking to German media after receiving the Bild Coach of the Year award on Monday, Flick was asked about Yamal and used a few of the words we’ve heard before: genius, game-winner, intelligent. He also pointed out Lamine’s age and how he must continue to grow.
And then came the big statement, as Flick gave his prediction about where Yamal’s career will end up:
“Lamine is a true genius. Especially at his age, 18, he decides games single-handedly. He’s on the right track. He’s also very intelligent. But of course, he’s still very young at 18 and has to learn from others. We support him. I’m convinced he’ll be one of the best players the world of football has ever seen.”
That is high, high praise indeed, and if Hansi Flick is the one saying it, I’m not about to disagree.
