All the early injury news surrounding Arsenal and Liverpool as they prepare to face off in the Premier League.
Arsenal are back in action on Sunday, and they face a huge test against likely Premier League title rivals Arsenal in what will be an early glimpse at who the potential favourites are. The Gunners have won both of their games so far, and they looked particularly good in their five-goal win over Leeds United last time out.
Meanwhile, Liverpool defeated AFC Bournemouth in their first game and scored late to secure a dramatic late win over 10-man Newcastle United on Monday night. Here we round up all the early injury news surrounding both teams heading into this one.
Jeremie Frimpong - Out
Frimpong will be out until around mid-September with a hamstring issue. Arne Slot has said: “The medical team was completely right about Jeremie to tell me that I had to take him off, because he is out until the end of the international break. So, a good call to take him off; otherwise, he would have maybe been out for longer.”
Conor Bradley - Doubt
Bradley has been working his way from a long-term issue. Slot said last week: “Conor trained for a few minutes with us today for the first time.” He perhaps has an outside chance of retuning here, but he will remain a serious doubt.
Bukayo Saka - Doubt
Saka picked up an injury against Leeds, though The Athletic say is it not believed to be serious. Still, he will be a doubt for this one until confirmed otherwise.
Martin Odegaard - Doubt
The same applies to Odegaard, who went off last time out, but there isn’t a concern over a long-term injury at this stage.
Ben White - Doubt
Arteta was hoping White would return for the Leeds game, but he didn’t quite make it back. He should be in contention for the Liverpool game, but it’s still unclear at this stage.
Kai Havertz - Out
Havertz picked up a knee injury in training this week, and it’s believes the Gunners will manage it conservatively for a couple of weeks to see if surgery can be avoided, but it’s likely the forward will miss the Liverpool game. Speaking before the Leeds game, Arteta said: “Well, he's certainly not fit for this match, unfortunately. We don’t really know yet the extent of it, I think we need a bit more time and some more tests, and after that we will have more clarity about the next steps.
“I prefer not to talk about the specifics, but he’s not fit, as I said, and we need to explore that issue a little bit further and decide what we’re going to do. The worst scenario is that he cannot play tomorrow, I would love to have him fresh and available, bringing what he brings to the team but unfortunately, that is not going to be possible.
Christian Norgaard - Out
Norgaard has come into the season struggling with a small issue, and he will likely miss the Liverpool game. Arteta said before the Leeds game: “Christian won't be in the squad. Christian will be out for another week or so.”
Gabriel Jesus - Out
Jesus remains out long-term after suffering a ruptured ACL in January. Arteta has said: “Gabi is doing super well. I think he looks in a really good place, obviously it’s a massive injury and we need to come from that in a really strong way, but certainly he’s in the right place and with very strong strides I think.”
