What Joelinton was seen doing after his Newcastle United injury is not a good sign

Joelinton was taken off injured during Newcastle United’s 3-2 loss against Liverpool, but his gesture while getting treatment was telling.

After fighting back from 2-0 down after being reduced to 10 men, the Magpies can hold their heads high despite conceding a late goal against Liverpool.

Newcastle United were dealt a major setback just before half-time when Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Virgil van Dijk. His red card was the third he has received for the Magpies since signing in 2023, and his second in 14 matches.

While Gordon’s red card was one thing, there is more concern for Joelinton, who came off injured during the defeat. The Brazilian looked as though he overextended when sliding to get the ball, and stayed down for longer than many would have hoped.

With Joelinton a fresh concern for Eddie Howe, his reaction to the problem was telling.

Joelinton leaves the pitch in tears after injury in Newcastle United defeat

Joelinton was one of Newcastle’s best players last season, but he missed the last few games of the term due to a knee problem. This appears to be a new issue for the 29-year-old, who was seen holding his thigh while on the floor.

He was quickly substituted for Jacob Ramsey, who played a minor part in Newcastle’s comeback.

Joelinton was not the only midfielder to leave the pitch injured, as Sandro Tonali was forced off with a shoulder issue in the second period.

In the space of 100 minutes, Newcastle have lost four of their starting XI due to injury, suspension and concussion.

Joelinton’s injury will hurt even more after a personal milestone

The hope is that Joelinton can come back soon, but in his post-match press conference, Howe confirmed that his issue does not look good.

While the injury is one thing for Howe, it will mean so much more for Joelinton, who had just been named in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the upcoming international games.

If the injury is bad enough, he could be forced to drop out of the internationals just hours after being named.

Joelinton is such a powerful force in Newcastle’s team, so it will be devastating if he has to spend a large period of time on the sidelines. Newcastle managed just one win without Joelinton when he was missing for the final three games of last season, so there will be fear that results may not come in his absence.
