Daniel Farke drops confusing Leeds United statement ahead of Sheffield Wednesday clash

Leeds United take a break from Premier League duties on Tuesday night playing Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

Leeds United make the journey across Yorkshire on Tuesday night to Hillsborough where they play crisis club Sheffield Wednesday in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

It comes after a steady start to the Premier League campaign for Daniel Farke’s side, albeit on the back of a thumping 5-0 defeat against Arsenal last time out.

But in their opening game of the campaign, Leeds United beat Everton 1-0 to put three points on the board. Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, have taken one point from their opening three Championship games of the season.

Daniel Farke drops Leeds United team news hint for Sheffield Wednesday

A cup run is always a welcome bonus to any campaign, and it can also be a nice source of income for teams who can progress far. But many Leeds United fans would take Premier League survival over a Carabao Cup run this season, and that’s exactly what Farke is thinking as well.

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the weekend, Farke said that his priority is definitely the Premier League. But Farke has also said that he takes the cup very seriously, and so how he lines it up on Tuesday night remains a bit of a mystery.

Farke said: “I take the cup competition seriously, otherwise we wouldn’t travel there. We want to progress to the next round, but it’s also fair to say that the priority is definitely Premier League and survival in the Premier League.

“We won’t do anything stupid. We won’t risk a player if there is an injury, doubt, or a doubt in terms of load.”

Five Leeds United players who could feature vs Sheffield Wednesday

Expect Farke to name a very much changed side from the Leeds United XI that played Arsenal last time out, but expect there to be quality nonetheless. Likewise, Sheffield Wednesday could name a heavily changed side with Championship safety no doubt their priority this season.

One change could be in goal for Leeds United. Last time out, Leeds fans were unimpressed with Lucas Perri against Arsenal and so Tuesday’s game against Wednesday could be a chance to give him a break and bring in Karl Darlow.

Meanwhile, expect a first start in Leeds colours for Sean Longstaff who is yet to start in the Premier League. We could also get a good look at fellow new signing Noah Okafor. Last week, Leeds United signed Okafor from AC Milan in an £18m deal and the Swiss international came off the bench against Arsenal later on.

Elsewhere, Lukas Nmecha could make his first competitive start for Leeds United in place of Joel Piroe and the divisive Jack Harrison could get a good run out, having featured once off the bench so far this season.

Leeds United’s game against Sheffield Wednesday kicks off at 7.45pm.
