Arne Slot has provided an injury update on Alexis Mac Allister after the midfielder was left out of Liverpool's win over Newcastle on Monday.

After taking a two-goal lead at St James' Park, the Reds looked set to be leaving the North East with just a point before 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha stepped up off the bench to net a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The result sees Liverpool maintain their perfect start to the campaign as they look to make a successful defence of their Premier League title.

Mac Allister was integral to last year's triumph and Liverpool fans will no doubt be sweating over the possibility of being without the midfielder, who joined the club from Brighton in 2023.

Slot though, insisted he is optimistic that the Argentina international will soon return to the fold.

'We are hoping, yeah,' the Liverpool boss said.

The Argentinian has endured a disrupted pre-season after missing the tail end of Liverpool's title-winning campaign through injury

'He had to leave the training pitch two days ago. And that would not have been the biggest problem if he had a proper pre-season.

'But he missed out for so many weeks and there's a reason why he goes inside because he probably feels something.'

'That is the difficult balance to make for the players who have not had a proper pre-season. Because that is where you bring the base throughout the whole season.

'And these intensity levels, we faced last week (against Bournemouth) and this (at Newcastle) topped it up ten times I think.'

The Reds play host to Arsenal on Sunday and Slot added that he is hopeful that Mac Allister will be fit to be involved against the Gunners at Anfield.

He continued: 'You need to be so, so fit.

'Then it is a risk if you bring a player who didn't have a proper pre-season, in this environment, with such a long season to go, it was too much of a risk for me.

'But I am hoping, I am hoping things improve in the next one or two days so he is available for Sunday.'
