BALTIMORE — Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman hasn’t allowed a hit since the day the New England Patriots held their first official training camp practice July 23.
The Patriots held their final training camp practice Monday before needing to cut down their roster to 53 players Tuesday.
That’s just one way of putting the 37-year-old’s dominance into perspective. His hitless streak spans the entire Patriots’ training camp period.
Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning in the Red Sox’ 4-3 comeback victory over the Orioles on Monday.
“Obviously Chappy’s doing Chappy things,” said Garrett Whitlock, who tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Chapman has not allowed a hit to his last 38 batters faced, dating back to July 23 at Philadelphia when J.T. Realmuto homered against him.
His hitless stretch spans 13 straight appearances, the longest such streak in franchise history. He surpassed Brandon Workman and Koji Uehara, who each had 11 straight hitless appearances — Uehara in 2013 and Workman in 2019.
Chapman needed to throw just seven pitches to retire the side in order Monday.
“Very efficient lately, which is awesome,” manager Alex Cora said. “He’s been great for us, pounding the strike zone, staying ready, being able to post. The communication has been outstanding from his end, just letting us know when he can go. He was going to go three in a row the other day. He was ready for that.”
Chapman has converted 25-of-27 save opportunities. He has a 1.06 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in 56 outings. Opponents are batting .121 against him.
He has allowed one run and two hits during the second half.
“It’s a lot of fun to watch Chappy do what he’s doing,” Whitlock said. “It’s special. And he’s a fantastic guy, a fantastic teammate. And so I’ve been really happy to be lucky enough to play with him.”
