Bukayo Saka injury rules him out for 4 weeks

Bukayo Saka will be out for up to four weeks after suffering a left hamstring injury during Arsenal’s 5-0 victory over Leeds United.

The 23-year-old limped off early in the second half, raising immediate concern on the touchline.

Mikel Arteta admitted at full-time that the winger’s request to come off was “not a good sign”, initially fearing the damage could be significant.

Scans have since shown the problem is less severe than first thought, though severe enough to rule him out until late September.

Importantly, the injury is on the opposite leg to the one that required surgery and kept him sidelined for almost four months last season.

The timing of the setback is a major blow.

Saka will miss Arsenal’s trip to Anfield this weekend for a top-of-the-table meeting with Liverpool, as well as England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, although Arsenal fans could not care less about those games.

The 23-year-old hobbled off during the Gunners’ 5-0 thrashing of Leeds at the weekend, after sustaining an injury to his left hamstring which Mikel Arteta initially said might be ‘significant’. However, scans showed a less serious injury than the Arsenal boss feared. Captain Martin Odegaard damaged his right shoulder during the Leeds match, but Arsenal are confident he hasn’t sustained a long-term injury and the Norwegian has not been ruled out of the trip to Anfield.

Domestically, he is also expected to sit out the games against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Arsenal’s summer signings have at least given Arteta more options in attack, with Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke all capable of filling the void.

Even so, Saka’s influence in Arsenal’s team makes him difficult to replace.

There was further alarm when Martin Ødegaard fell awkwardly on his right shoulder during the same game. Arsenal are confident, however, that their captain has avoided serious damage and he has not yet been ruled out of the trip to Liverpool.

The relief is that Saka’s absence will be measured in weeks rather than months.

His absence, though, will still be felt in a run of matches that could shape Arsenal’s season.
