Coleman misses out as Ogbene and Bazunu return

Heimir Hallgrimsson has opted not to include captain Seamus Coleman in the Republic of Ireland squad for next month's opening set of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while Chiedozie Ogbene and Gavin Bazunu make their returns.

The Boys in Green open their campaign against Hungary at Aviva Stadium on Saturday, 6 September, before making the trip to Armenia on Tuesday, 9 September.

But Everton skipper Coleman will not be involved in the 23-man selection, with left back Robbie Brady having already been ruled out through injury. The 36-year-old has yet to feature for his club in the first two games of the Premier League season, although Hallgrimsson has recently emphasised the Donegal man's importance to the Irish squad.

However, Ipswich winger Ogbene has been recalled for the first time since he suffered an Achilles injury last October and Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu also returns after missing the June window through injury.

St Mirren's Killian Phillips, who made his senior bow in the June friendly against Senegal, has been called up, while versatile uncapped Stoke player Bosun Lawal has also been included, having been drafted in ahead of the draw in Luxembourg that month.

Ireland are in a four-team qualifying group alongside Hungary, Armenia and group favourites Portugal.

All qualifying matches will be broadcast live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.
