David de Gea could be set for a surprise Manchester United reunion with his former Old Trafford teammate Victor Lindelof in talks to sign for Fiorentina.

De Gea, 34, left United in June 2023 after 12 years with the club. During that time, De Gea made 545 appearances, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League among other honours.

De Gea departed United following the expiration of his contract, leaving as a free agent. There had been talk that he could return straight to action and move to Saudi Arabia, but the ex-Atletico Madrid stopper instead spent a considerable amount of time out of the game. Indeed, De Gea did not sign for another club for more than 12 months - until August 2024 - when he made the move to Serie A side Fiorentina.

The Spaniard impressed during his first season in Florence, keeping 11 clean sheets and conceding just 50 goals in 42 matches. De Gea was rewarded for his fine performances with a new three-year contract at La Viola.

Although Fiorentina didn't have a particularly poor defensive record last season, they want to strengthen their back-line before the end of the transfer window. Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Stefano Pioli's side are in talks over a surprise deal to sign Lindelof, who is a free agent after leaving United back in June.

Negotiations have started with his camp, while Lindelof also has two offers from the Premier League. The final decision is up to the Sweden international, though Fiorentina are pushing to get a deal done.

Should Lindelof make the move to Florence, he would complete a reunion with ex-United teammate De Gea. The duo played together at Old Trafford for six years between 2017 and 2023. Throughout that period, Lindelof and De Gea helped the Reds to some success, winning the Carabao Cup during their final season in Manchester.

Lindelof departed United at the end of last campaign, following eight years of service. He played 284 times for the club, picking up two major trophies and becoming an established member of the first-team squad.

But, after struggled for regular game time following the appointment of Ruben Amorim last November, Lindelof exited United when his contract expired in June. Speaking after his final game for the Reds in May, he said: "Yeah, I am proud of myself. It's been a lot of ups and downs. But I mean, for me to be able to represent this club for eight years, it's been an honour and a privilege, and a dream come true."
